Polyglots’ attitudes to accent and pronunciation - Mateusz Pietraszek | PG 2023
A lot of research on motivation and attitudes has been conducted to date amongst learners of second languages but studies on polyglottery are fairly scarce. After last year’s Polyglot Gathering, I designed and carried out a survey on polyglots’ motivation, goals and attitudes in the process of acquiring the pronunciation of their target language(s). The response of the community was very positive. In this talk, the original data gathered in the survey will be presented for the first time. But the presentation won’t only examine pronunciation goals and attitudes among language learning enthusiasts. We will also compare polyglot attitudes towards pronunciation acquisition with those of othe...

Does learning each new language get easier? - Gareth Popkins | PG 2023
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.14 дней назад
Learning one foreign language well is quite an undertaking. All the same, many of us catch the bug and want to learn several. I bet I’m not the only one who’s drawn up a list of target tongues and who has also hoped that with each one, things will get easier. But what difference, exactly, does experience make? In this exploration of the fruits and frustrations of learning many languages, I’ll s...
Jumpstart Your Esperanto: Learn Top Morphemes and Grammar Fast | PG 2023

Esperanto is a language known for being easy and structured, with many online resources available. Despite Esperanto’s unique features that can help learners make rapid progress, many courses fail to take advantage of them. In this workshop, we will explore the “Zagreb method”, which teaches Esperanto using the 500 most frequent morphemes (=meaningful word parts), that make up 95% of spoken Esp...

Ever wondered what it takes to be a conference interpreter? What languages you’d need to know? Where you could work? What skills you’d need to hone? Whether you’re an experienced interpreter, considering the profession or just curious, come along to fin...
Finding Your Language Identity: How It Compares to Buying a Winter Coat? | PG 2023

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive while abroad is: “Where are you from?” When people ask this question they usually tend to satisfy their desire to know - Who are you? What’s your nationality? What’s your native language? And why do you look the way you do? - all at a time. However, imagine if you had to answer this question every day, even in your home country. Well, it’s p...

From learning indigenous, endangered and vulnerable languages to imitating accents and speech patterns, the topic of learning languages is not always as straight forward as one might think. Harper Collins described him as one of the most multilingual people in the United...

But more importantly, I’ll be talking about the significance of this ...

Imagine a time when even servants and tradespeople could converse in Latin! And I am not talking about the times of one or two thousand years ago! While we all know that Latin was the official language of the Roman Empire, not many know that it was also a significant language in Poland long after the Middle Ages. In fact, it was so widely spoken that a man fluent in Latin could ’travel from one...

Interesting topic. I prefer to learn fairly intensively as well. I watched the video of the final result of the Korean project mentioned here (3 months of studying, followed by 5 months of practice in Korea). I'd evaluate his level to be between TOPIK level 1 and 2 [reasoning: narrow use of grammar and vocab; number of mistakes; misunderstanding simple questions]. I'd say he got through something equivalent to 연세 한국어 1 (out of 6 levels), and figuratively skimmed through level 2, but is a ways from mastery in level 2 (approx. A2).

I’m Teochew from Singapore. Our family speaks Teochew at home. I migrated to Brisbane, Australia 60 years ago. I go to a Vietnamese village, in Brisbane, to do shopping once a month. Sometimes I hear people speaking Teochew & it’s music to my ears. There are 8 tones in Teochew dialect. Some of the tones have a nasal sound & it’s difficult for people to master. For example the word Swatow (Shangtou in Mandarin) where the Teochew people come from. This word has a nasal sound. Swatow means mountain head. But if it’s said without the nasal tone, the word becomes sand head. For people who grew up speaking Teochew, the tones come naturally. But for people learning Teochew the tones can be a challenge. I’m very proud to be a Teochew nang.
